2026 Quick Facts

New Jersey offers two primary benefits: a **$250 annual deduction** for all honorably discharged veterans with active duty service, and a **100% full exemption** for veterans with a permanent service-connected disability. Note: A new 2026 bill (A2939) is currently proposing an additional $5,000 deduction for veterans with partial disabilities.

The $250 Veteran Deduction

This is the most common benefit. It is an annual deduction from your property tax bill for any veteran who served during active duty and was honorably discharged.

  • Eligibility: You must own the property and be a legal resident of NJ as of Oct 1st of the pretax year.
  • How to apply: File **Form V.S.S.** with your local municipal assessor.

The 100% Disabled Veteran Exemption

If you are 100% permanently and totally disabled due to active duty service, you may qualify for a complete exemption—meaning you owe **$0 in property taxes** on your primary residence.

Required Documentation

You must provide a VA Certification Letter specifically stating your 100% disability is "Permanent and Total." A standard award letter is often not enough for the local assessor.

Rules for Surviving Spouses

Surviving spouses of eligible veterans can continue to receive these benefits as long as they were married at the time of death, remain unmarried, and continue to own and occupy the home as their primary residence.
